US TV show Empire has become the first production on US networks to feature a black and gay wedding on screen.
The episode, titled “Never Doubt I Love”, aired on April 25, and saw Jamal and his fiancé Kai (Jussie Smollett and Toby Onwumere, respectively) take the big plunge together.
As an added treat, Vibe reports that Empire even roped in the legendary Chaka Khan to perform at the fictional star-studded wedding. In addition, Mario and Wood Harris also showed up to celebrate.
“Today’s wedding is special and controversial,” Khan said afterward when asked about her particular cameo. “But my answer to all that is just love is love.”
However, as Out.com reveals, this could simultaneously also be Jussie Smollett’s final episode on the series after being written out of the show’s final two episodes following his legal troubles stemming from an alleged attack he experienced on January 29 near his Chicago home.
After police investigation into the matter, Smollett was charged with filing a false police report, though prosecutors later dropped the charges.
