Local hitmaker AKA has apologised for using a homophobic slur to refer to one of his artistic rivals. The rapper drew criticism earlier this month from both the online and LGBTQI+ community after referring to Cassper Nyovest as a “moffie” because the latter had not signed a contract yet for a planned celebrity boxing match between them.
As reported by TimesLive, a large number of AKA’s fans, including comedian Lasizwe, slammed him for using the slur. Some even called for the rapper to be “cancelled”.
“The moment someone uses the word ‘moffie’ you’re cancelled! It’s like using the k-word. It’s so tragic that you guys find this entertaining! This is the same word used to undermine and cause hate in the LGBTQI+ community. Remember, hate sometimes causes fear and fear causes death,” Lasizwe tweeted.
In response to the backlash, AKA then proceeded to issue an apology via his Twitter account.
“I’d like to apologise to anybody offended by my use of the word ‘moffie’ in a previous tweet. At some point, I thought it wasn’t a big deal to use this word. I understand now that it’s not acceptable,” he tweeted.
The post was followed up by another one in which AKA added that he had simply lost his cool and had “an epic failure of judgement and hotheadedness”.
“Sometimes your idiot self gets the better of you,” he concluded.
While Nyovest has yet to respond to the apology, he has made it known that another earlier insult directed towards him (in this tweet AKA made reference to Nyovest’s parents) was not going to be let go that easily.
“I’m not innocent at all in this thing but I have never disrespected anybody’s parents or family. So miss me with that, because I just wasn’t raised like that. There’s a line that you don’t cross! Even with enemies!” he tweeted.
