Hot on the heels of its success when it premiered at the Baxter earlier this year, Adam Gwon’s hit musical Ordinary Days returns to the Baxter Flipside for limited one-week only season from Tuesday May 21 to Saturday May 25 at 8pm, with a matinee on Saturday, at 4pm.
Presented by Square Pegged Productions, it is a funny, fresh and modern story, about two women and two men who navigate their relationships against the backdrop of vibrant New York City. The story will touch the hearts of audiences with its beautiful storytelling and they search for love, success and happiness.
Byron Bure directs the ensemble of four comprising seasoned musical performers Kirsten Murphy Rossiter (West Side Story, Jersey Boys, Grease) as Claire, Kenneth Meyer (Matilda, Singing in The Rain, Jersey Boys) as Jason, Josie Piers as Debs (We Will Rock You, Hairspray) and Logan Timbre (Matilda, West Side Story, Priscilla Queen Of The Desert) as Warren. The musical is sung accousticly with piano accompaniment by Kevin Kim.
“Ordinary Days has been one of my favourite musicals of all time,” says director Bure. “The music and lyrics speak so easily to me. The show takes us on an inspirational feel-good and emotional journey.”
The young director has established his own drama, musical theatre and dance academy, called Bure Academy of Theatre Arts, which is situated in Gardens. Before that he taught at the Waterfront Theatre School for two years, where he also obtained his Licentiate in both Drama and Musical Theatre, his Licentiate Teaching Diploma and a postgraduate course in Stage Directing. He won Best Musical Theatre Actor in his third year and was honoured with the Most Outstanding Student award in his final year.
Bure has performed in numerous productions which include Godspell, Hairspray, Preeoudly Seeouff Effriken, A Chorus Line, The Yellow Wood, at the National Arts Festival, Grahamstown and Footloose and Othello before co-writing and starring in the touring show, The Regulars.
He made directing debut with Jason D Martin’s Dying Light,at the Galloway Theatre in Cape Town and which toured to The National Arts Festival and it has since been performed in the Afrikaans translation, Donker Lig at The Klein Libertas Theatre and Die Pierneef Theatre. Other directorial works include Doctor Godenstein’s Man and the national tour of the musical, Rent, before taking on the role as assistant director for The Wizard of Oz at Artscape Theatre.
Square Pegged productions was established in November last year by Byron Bure, Kirsten Murphy Rossiter, and Josie Piers, all three graduates of The Waterfront Theatre School, with the vision of bringing bring new, fresh and perhaps little known shows to audiences, to celebrate the unusual and in a sense, the underdog. They hope to unfold many more exciting projects but firstly, they hope to capture hearts with Ordinary Days, their debut show.
