Boer Soek ‘n Vrou adds its first-ever gay farmer

Damien Engelbrecht.
The popular Afrikaans reality dating show on kykNET, Boer Soek ‘n Vrou, has made headlines by including its first gay contestant among its line-up of farmers looking for love during the upcoming 12th season.

Taking the big public step is 37-year-old cattle and sheep farmer from Bapsfontein, Damian Engelbrecht. The other nine contestants come from all over the country, range between the ages of 26 and 51, and are all looking for female companions. In total, there are five farmers from the Western Cape, two from the Northern Cape, two from the Eastern Cape and one from Gauteng.

According to Mambaonline, Damien, who has also taught himself to play the piano, believes that farming is in his blood. When it comes to his approach towards life, he’s quoted as saying: “I’m a soft and a hard person. I know what I want in life and I don’t want to settle for less.

“I think things are getting easier for gay farmers but it’s not something that’s very easy. There are still people here and there who raise their eyebrows but there is also a lot of acceptance. We are all just people looking for love.”

Mambaonline further reports that Damien is looking for a man who has ambition and will share his love for farm life, and believes he has struggled to find love to date because he “doesn’t always make the first move”.
