Phat Joe taken off air over alleged homophobic comments

Majota Khambule, popularly known as Phat Joe.

Popular Radio 2000 breakfast host Phat Joe, real name Majota Khambule, has been taken off air “until further notice” after the presenter made alleged homophobic remarks related to the debate surrounding socialite Zodwa Wabantu.

Wabantu came under fire in recent weeks after comments she made on her reality show, Zodwa Wabantu: Uncensored. According to The Citizen, while highlighting the stereotypical characteristics of homosexual men, she was caught on tape saying that gay people are naughty.

“Name a gay person in the industry who has never fought with a girl. They are convinced that they have a vagina, [but] they have a penis. We have vaginas,” the entertainer continued. “We accommodate you guys so that you feel that you get to wear makeup. When we talk about me, you’ll get a chance too.”

Discussing the matter on his radio show, Phat Joe then decided to add his own view on the debate, and proceeded to ask why gay men “would not accept how hard it is for most people to accept their lifestyle”.

As a result, the SABC confirmed to TimesLIVE, the presenter has subsequently been “unscheduled until further notice”. Spokesperson Vuyo Mthembu, however, said the matter was between Joe and the SABC.

“The SABC can confirm that Phat Joe has been unscheduled until further notice. This is a matter between the employer and employee, and we cannot comment further at this stage”.
